Yes - It is strongly recommended by all industry bodies that operators working at height receive appropriate training, especially when using powered access platforms. It is also a duty of care for employers to ensure that their workforce are adequately trained on any equipment they are asked to use. See our Training page for details of IPAF courses for operators.
Firstly establish the height you need to reach to comfortably perform the task. Generally scissor lifts or personnel lifts are used for a vertical lift, boom lifts when some outreach is also required. Decide on power type - generally electric for indoor work, diesel for outdoors or travel over rough-terrain, where a tracked access platform may be more appropriate. Check the detailed machine specification for sufficient lift capacity, and if there are weight or width restrictions.
